4 Tips to save on moving costs

  • March 6, 2020
  1. Purge!

The first thing you should do when you have decided to move is go through all of your belongings.  This is a great opportunity to make some money, whether you try to sell your lightly used items online through Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or you decide to have an old fashioned garage sale.  If money is no object, and you would rather just be done with items, you should think of donating them to a local charity. There are several local charities in Tucson that would be happy to take your old items, and some will even send people out to pick up larger items such as bedroom sets, couches, or heavier furniture such as hutches.  The one thing that you should do is to make sure you are not trying to sell or donate any ripped, stained or damaged items. If you have things in poor condition, just toss them.

  1. Collect used boxes from stores

You would be shocked at the amount of boxes that are available for pick up behind any big box store.  The polite thing to do is ask someone that works there if they have any extra boxes from product shipments that they would be willing to part with, and they can direct you to such an area.  If you go this route, I am sure that whoever usually has the job of breaking down boxes for recycling will be more than happy to let you take them off their hands. It would also be wise to reach out to friends and family as they may have some extra boxes they are trying to get rid of as well.  One thing you should consider is packing your belongings into any suitcases, bags or baskets that you may have as well and then save the boxes for items that are breakable and will need bubble wrap.

  1. Borrow Tools

Moving is NOT easy, however, there are certain tools that you can use to help when it comes to moving heavy and awkwardly shaped objects.   If you know anyone that has any dollies, moving straps or flooring sliders, you should definitely ask if you can borrow them for the duration of your move.  When you move, you will have more than just square boxes, which on their own are tough to carry after you’ve moved about two, but imagine if you had a hand dolly and could move three boxes easier in one load, than carrying three boxes one trip at a time.  Then you have to consider large appliances or furniture that even the strongest of people would have issues moving; given the option, they would all use dollies or lifting straps to ease the load. It is worth contacting a local moving company in Tucson to see if they allow rentals for their professional tools as well.  They may even be able to come out to your home to suggest what tools to use for any particularly large items.

  1. Rent a moving truck

It may seem like the opposite of trying to save money when moving, but honestly, hiring a moving company is so affordable these days, it really is foolish to do it any other way.  Many of us call in favors from friends with trucks, but not only are you taking up their time, but also causing wear and tear on their trucks and your friendship.

In short, you will be able to move more items in a moving truck with a local moving company that is often only around $200-$300 for a few hours and be able to maintain your favors and friendships for emergencies.

Saving money is great, but if time is a factor, you should reach out to a local moving company in Tucson, because hiring a moving company is not nearly as expensive as people think!  We can move you locally or long distance, and we can make the process quick and efficient, leaving you to sort out the important details of your move, such as the best pizza delivery in your new neighborhood.  Zooz Moving is here to make your move less stressful and easy on you. We hope to hear from you soon and happy moving!
